Culture

Culture is a pretty hot business buzzword right now. Basketball hoops in the office. Unlimited vacation time. Cool branded swag. All good stuff. We’re into it. But is that culture? We don’t think so.

Every business has a culture. For better or worse. And we believe that a lot of companies want it to be good but often miss the mark.

At 22 Waters, we are here to do the hard work of building, creating, cultivating, and growing the healthiest culture possible.

Does it really exist?

Some people might not believe that a truly healthy company culture exists, but we know that even though both amazing work culture and unicorns might seem like they’re just fantasies, they’re really out there (well, at least one of them is.)

So what is Unicorn Culture?

Unicorn culture at 22 Waters can be defined by a few words.

Safe. Our team is encouraged to communicate the good, the bad, and the ugly - to push back when they don’t agree, to challenge ideas no matter what level they come from, to share when they are feeling overwhelmed or unsure, to ask all the questions and to know that they will be respected and heard. We believe that ideas are not people and that we all learn, grow, and are challenged to do our best when everyone is allowed to have a voice.

Honor. Our team holds one another in the highest regard, not only with our words, but our actions. We speak to each other directly when we have a difference of opinion, when toes are stepped on, or when we aren’t communicating well. We don’t gossip, tear down, or act in harmful ways. We work for the health of our team and uphold a high standard of conduct.

Bold. We have a bright and strong spirit. We aim big and we hold ourselves accountable for those aspirations. We are equal parts dreamers as we are problem solvers. We are fearless in that we stay with problems longer and don’t give up when things get tough - we think of new ways.

Work. Unicorn level culture doesn’t come easy. We put in the time and organize in such a way that encourages open and frequent communication. We make time for fun and team building, not so we can check off the “fun” box, but so our team can bond, get to know each other better, create memories, and remember that we’re all humans with lives outside of work.

Why does it matter?

Unicorn culture is a big deal around here and it makes a huge difference in who we are for a few reasons.

#1 We attract great people. Awesome people don’t fit in toxic cultures. Toxic people don’t fit in awesome cultures. Every single person on our team has to fit our core values of curiosity, integrity, culture, and excellence.

#2 We are able to maintain a standard of excellence. Because we are radically committed to listening to even the quietest person on the team and we take egos out of decision making, our ideas get torn apart, rebuilt, sharpened, and refined in a truly amazing way. Ideas that start good become incredible.

#3 We give our clients the best service. Our clients reap the benefits of a culture that allows people to admit mistakes, ask questions, and learn daily. Our team is committed to a common goal and we work hard to ensure that we deliver that for the clients we serve.

#4 We like where we work. Some days are hard and not every moment is rainbows and butterflies. But work shouldn’t be something you hate. It should be something that brings joy and fulfillment in your life. We get to have that and we think you should too.
